Report #036 02/01/03 SW LISTENERS CONVENTION - Another reminder to you that the 16th Annual Winter SWL Festival will be held at the Best Western Hotel 7-8 March in Kulpsville, PA. Go to www.swlfest.com and click on Register for the registration instructions. Next click on Fest Hotel for reservation information. Then click on Forums to get an advanced peek at the scheduled seminars. And be sure to click on Door Prizes to take a look at the neat Grand Prize of a Ten-Tec RX-350 DSP receiver. Fest attendees are invited to pick up a copy of a CRYPTOQUIP puzzle from the hand-out table and attempt to decrypt the message. The plaintext is an appropriate statement applicable to the SWL Fest. The first person with the correct solution who contacts me at the Fest will receive a copy of THE UNDERGROUND FREQUENCY GUIDE. Included with the book are several pages of updated material. WORLDWIDE UTILITY NEWS (WUN) - Possibly some folks have not as yet heard about the WUN. This Web club puts out a monthly newsletter of utility intercepts, special reports, and you a Email list you can subscribe to for receiving loggings of monitored transmissions which are available in a very timely fashion. Take a lookl at the offerings of WUN at www.wunclub.com. BUZZER STATION - A comprehensive report is available through www.DXing.com/news.htm which provides an in depth study of the buzzer station which operates on 4625 kHz. Click on UVB-76 for an interesting rundown on this Russian channel marker which apparently serves a Moscow area/Central Russia link. AGENTURA - As mentioned last month this Russian web site had not had any recent entries. This month there was only one new item, dated 13 January 2003. The article I dealt with a new section of AGENTURA which covers the recent formation of the State Customs Committee (SCC). The English capsule summary said "Not a secret that SCC has the right to investigate and own force subdivisions for that activity. So it actually is one more Russian secret service." Unfortunately, the complete text is in the Russian language. SOVIET UNION GLOSSARY - A 21 page Glossary is available at www.fas.org/irp/world/russia/su_glos.html. The Glossary is ion English with Russian words where appropriate. Also available at the FAS site is an article which defines the Security Classification Levels used by the Russian Federation. Go to www.fas.org/irp/world/russia/class.
MOSCOW POLICE CHECKING FOREIGNERS - The RFE/RL website recently carried a news report indicating that "City police will be making regular checks of foreigners migration cards". I wonder if this is an outgrowth of the SOUD project??
